Authorities in Morocco’s Tata Province confirmed on Sunday the recovery of two bodies today following devastating floods triggered by intense thunderstorms on Friday, according to a report from Medi1TV.
Among the victims are the driver of a passenger bus, and a young woman whose body was found near the Oufran River.
According to local officials, the tragedy unfolded after severe thunderstorms brought unprecedented flooding to the region.
On Friday, flash floods caused the bus to be swept away, leading to a tragic incident that has left at least two people dead. A rescue operation saved 13 passengers, but 14 remain unaccounted for as of Sunday evening.
Search and rescue teams are also looking for a woman who went missing due to the floodwaters in a nearby village.
The extreme weather conditions have caused water levels in the region to rise dramatically. Authorities reported that Oued Tata reached a flow rate of over 2,300 cubic meters per second, while Oued Zguid saw levels of up to 1,900 cubic meters per second—both figures are unprecedented.
The torrential rains and resulting floods have caused significant material damage throughout Tata Province. Early assessments show widespread destruction of several homes either partially or completely. Residents had been evacuated before the floods hit.
In addition, numerous infrastructure projects, including bridges and roads, sustained heavy damage or collapsed.
