Moroccan authorities announced on Sunday the successful interception of a significant drug trafficking operation at the Port of Safi, resulting in the seizure of more than 8 tons of chira, a potent cannabis resin.
In a coordinated operation between the Provincial Security Services of Safi and the National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ), law enforcement officials intercepted a freight truck carrying the illicit cargo, which was packaged in 199 bales and intended for international distribution via maritime routes.
The truck was stopped as it arrived at the Safi-Atlantic port on Saturday night.
The operation led to the arrest of 21 individuals, aged 24 to 48, suspected of being part of the criminal network orchestrating the trafficking.
In addition, authorities confiscated barrels containing 1,160 liters of gasoline, as well as another vehicle linked to the operation.
According to the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the investigations unfolded over several weeks. The operation is based on intelligence reports about the planned drug trafficking activity. The intelligence allowed officers to track the shipment before it could be distributed.
The suspects are now under investigation as officials are working to uncover the full extent of the network’s operations and its international connections.
