Several provinces in Morocco will experience severe thunderstorms, hail, and powerful winds today, according to a weather alert from the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM).
Classified as an orange-level warning, the alert forecasts heavy thunderstorms that could bring rainfall ranging between 30 and 60 mm. The storms are expected to impact the region from 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Affected areas include Tata, Tinghir, Zagora, Figuig, Errachidia, Taroudant, Aousserd, Es-Semara, Guelmim, Ouarzazate, Assa-Zag, Oued Ed-Dahab, Boujdour, and Tiznit
The news comes as floods are sweeping across cities in eastern Morocco. Earlier today, two people were confirmed dead, and 14 others were reported missing after a passenger bus was swept away by flash floods in Oued Tata on Friday.
Rescue efforts have so far saved 13 passengers, while 14 remain unaccounted for. Authorities are treating the current figures as provisional, with search and rescue operations ongoing to locate the missing.
The torrents also caused widespread damage across the region. Several homes collapsed either partially or completely. Luckily, most residents had been evacuated in time.
Infrastructural damage has been severe, with numerous roads affected, causing traffic disruptions in several key areas.
