The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference hosted in Vienna unanimously elected Morocco on Thursday to the Board of Governors for its 2024-2026 term.
During its tenure, Morocco will focus on promoting dialogue and consensus to strengthen multilateralism and advance nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. The IAEA promotes the peaceful use of nuclear energy and aims to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
The international community’s decision to choose Morocco for this position reflects the growing confidence in the Kingdom’s commitment to peaceful dialogue, and consensus in multilateral forums, under King Mohammed VI’s leadership.
Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane, said that “Morocco is dedicated to South-South cooperation.” The Kingdom’s current foreign policy aims to strengthen ties with fellow African nations, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
After previously chairing the IAEA General Conference in 2020, the Kingdom will continue its efforts over the next two years to enhance the agency’s technical cooperation, particularly by helping African countries use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes in areas such as water, agriculture, health, and the environment.
Established in 1957, the IAEA works to ensure that nuclear technology and materials are used safely, securely, and for peaceful purposes.
It operates with a Board of Governors and a General Conference. The Board of Governors is a 35-member executive body responsible for overseeing the agency’s activities and making key policy decisions. The General Conference includes all member states and meets annually to discuss and set policies for the IAEA.
