Morocco has implemented a prudent policy to regulate cannabis cultivation for medicinal and industrial purposes, stated Moroccan Ambassador to Chile, Kenza El Ghali, during an interview on Chilean television.
El Ghali highlighted that the recent Royal Pardon granted to over 4,800 individuals convicted or prosecuted for cannabis-related offenses has facilitated their reintegration into society with dignity and legality, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
In the program “A fond,” aired by cable network Quinta Visión, she elaborated on the foundations of Morocco’s cannabis regulation policy, recalling the extensive debates surrounding the issue over the years.
The ambassador noted that since 2021, Morocco has enacted a law establishing the National Agency for Regulation of Cannabis Activities (ANRAC), to promote medicinal, pharmaceutical, and industrial uses of the plant grown in specific regions.
According to El Ghali, the legislation was designed to address issues stemming from illegal cannabis cultivation, marking a significant step toward resolution.
It defined the scope of application and designated areas for cultivation while prioritizing environmental protection by selecting suitable seeds to be grown in Morocco.
El Ghali also mentioned other legal uses of cannabis permitted by the law, including in textiles and cosmetics, emphasizing the importance of training for farmers who are now able to work legally with the plant.
This approach has also helped combat drug trafficking and intermediaries, reducing elements of danger and allowing farmers to live with dignity.
Reflecting on other numerous reforms Morocco has undertaken over the past 25 years, the ambassador highlighted advancements in women’s rights, migration management from sub-Saharan Africa, and efforts toward energy self-sufficiency.
She also reviewed key aspects of Morocco’s political system and electoral system, which enables party alternation in government, asserting that “Morocco is the most stable country in the region” with significant development rates, large investments, and a thriving automotive industry.
