King Mohammed VI’s advisor, André Azoulay, received Spain’s prestigious Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise on Thursday. The award was presented at a formal ceremony held at Madrid’s historic Viana Palace.
The Grand Cross of Alfonso X the Wise, one of Spain’s highest civilian awards, recognizes significant contributions to education, culture, and international relations. Past recipients include global figures such as Nelson Mandela, Angela Merkel, Gabriel García Márquez, and Federico Fellini.
During the ceremony, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares commended Azoulay’s lifelong dedication to fostering global dialogue and coexistence. “André Azoulay has worked tirelessly to position Morocco as a global leader in promoting coexistence and respect for diversity,” Albares said during the ceremony.
In his remarks, Albares said that this honor reflects Spain’s recognition of Azoulay’s role in enhancing Moroccan-Spanish relations over the past three decades.
Albares also emphasized the historical significance of the award, recalling the legacy of Alfonso X of Castile, the Wise King, who facilitated the transfer of Arab-Muslim knowledge to Europe.
Azoulay said he was proud to receive the award. “This recognition is a testament to Morocco’s commitment to mutual respect and cultural dialogue, as exemplified by the leadership of King Mohammed VI,” he said.
He shed light on the importance of continuing to promote values of freedom, dignity, and justice, which he believes transcend borders and unite diverse cultures.
The ceremony also spotlighted the ongoing positive momentum in Moroccan-Spanish relations. Azoulay reflected on significant historical milestones achieved by both nations, including the 1994 Peace Conference in Casablanca, the Barcelona Process, and the creation of the Three Cultures and Three Religions Foundation in Seville.
