The United Nations General Assembly adopted on Wednesday a resolution demanding Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories within the next 12 months, according to a report from Al Jazeera.
The resolution received overwhelming support with 124 countries voting in favor, 14 opposing, and 43 abstaining.
Spearheaded by Palestine and co-sponsored by Turkiye and over 50 other nations, the resolution asserts that Israel’s occupation is illegal under international law, referencing rulings from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the UN Security Council (UNSC).
The resolution condemns Israeli settlements in occupied territories as violations of international law and underscores the Palestinian right to self-determination as enshrined in the UN Charter. It explains that resolving the Palestine issue remains a “permanent responsibility” of the United Nations until a just and lawful resolution is achieved.
The resolution equally tasks UN Secretary-General António Guterres with presenting a report on its implementation within three months.
The resolution comes at a time when Israel’s war on Palestine has left a trail of destruction and claimed over 41,206 lives, with 95,337 wounded.
