Morocco has earned Tier 1 status in the latest Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The GCI evaluates countries based on five key pillars: legal, technical, organizational, capacity development, and cooperation.
Morocco scored exceptionally well across these categories, achieving a total of 97.5 out of 100 points. Specific scores are: Legal Measures (20/20), Technical Measures (18.12/20), Organizational Measures (20/20), Capacity Development Measures (19.38/20), and Cooperation Measures (20/20).
Countries in Tier 1, scoring between 95 and 100 points, are considered role models in cybersecurity. They demonstrate strong government-driven actions and comprehensive measures across all cybersecurity domains.
In this 2024 edition, 46 countries, including Morocco, have attained Tier 1 status, an increase from around 30 countries in the previous index.
Other top performers include Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and the United States.
The ITU’s report highlights that Tier 1 countries have implemented extensive measures such as robust legal frameworks, national computer incident response teams (CIRTs), and comprehensive national cybersecurity strategies.
These countries also engage in international cooperation and cybersecurity awareness initiatives.
Morocco’s achievement aligns with a global rise in cybersecurity efforts, with the average country score increasing to 65.7 out of 100, a 27% rise since 2020.
The GCI provides a benchmark for nations to evaluate their cybersecurity measures and identify areas for improvement.
