The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water’ (ONEE) regional office in Guelmim-Oued Noun initiated a project to build water desalination facilities to secure drinking water in the region, as water scarcity worsens.
A new seawater desalination plant in Plage Blanche, Guelmim, with a capacity of 230 l/s, will be operational by 2027.
This project, estimated at MAD 1 billion, will supply Guelmim and Assa-Zag, addressing the growing water demand.
Additional projects include well developments in Oued Sayad and Tan-Tan, along with expansions of existing desalination facilities.
These initiatives, with investments over MAD 1 billion in the past decade, have ensured stable water supply across the region.
ONEE continues to play a pivotal role in the national 2020-2027 program for water supply and irrigation, addressing water deficits.
Strategic projects like the Sidi Ifni desalination plant and other expansions contribute to the region’s water self-sufficiency.
The Draa-Oued Noun Hydraulic Basin Agency also supports these efforts by building dams and monitoring illegal water use.
These integrated efforts aim to ensure sustainable water supply and optimize the use of resources in Guelmim-Oued Noun.
