Morocco has renewed its call for an “immediate and durable” ceasefire in Gaza at the 57th UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva.
Abdellah Boutadghart, Morocco’s deputy representative in Geneva, emphasized the need for unconditional humanitarian aid access and civilian protection.
Boutadghart spoke during a debate on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk’s annual report on global human rights.
Türk’s updated report highlights a troubling state of human rights worldwide, with Gaza’s conflict being a significant concern.
Boutadghart praised Türk for his persistent efforts despite dwindling resources and worsening global crises.
He echoed concerns about migrant rights, systemic racism, climate change, food security, and the digital divide.
Morocco aims to address these issues with comprehensive, global measures for a more sustainable future.
Additionally, Morocco will host a side event on September 25, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission.
The event will focus on justice, reform, and transitional justice, showcasing Morocco’s experience in human rights.
Boutadghart highlighted Morocco’s unique approach, emphasizing consensus and dialogue over retaliation and confrontation.
The Human Rights Council will review over 80 reports and hold 20 interactive debates through October 11.
Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s permanent representative at the UN, presided over the council for 2024.
