Moroccan authorities arrested, on September 9-11, 60 suspects, including minors, for their alleged involvement in fabricating and spreading false news on social media to incite irregular migration.
This operation followed a probe by the National Security’s cyber vigilance units, which uncovered online content urging a coordinated breach of the security barrier between Fnideq and Sebta on September 15, a security source said, adding that this content, which circulated widely on social media, was aimed at orchestrating collective illegal migration.
Investigations, supported by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), identified 13 individuals involved in distributing this content.
These suspects were apprehended by Tetouan judicial police during a series of coordinated raids in the cities of Casablanca, Tetouan, Larache, Ouazzane, Rabat, Missour, Oujda, Fez, Mohammedia, and Ouislane.
In a parallel operation in Tangier, 47 suspects were arrested at railway and bus stations as they attempted to respond to digital content inciting a collective illegal immigration operation.
The arrested individuals are now undergoing judicial procedures under the supervision of the relevant prosecutor’s office.
Investigations are ongoing to uncover the masterminds behind these activities and to identify others involved in the creation and dissemination of content that promotes illegal immigration.
