Morocco’s Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, and Michel Saba, an expert on culture and art at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), signed an agreement in Rabat to establish the headquarters of the African Capitals of Culture Committee in Morocco, the ministry stated in a press release.
The agreement formalizes Morocco’s status as the host country for the Committee’s headquarters, following the African Union (AU) Executive Council’s July 2023 decision in Nairobi.
The move aligns with King Mohammed VI’s vision of enhanced collaboration with Africa on a South-South basis, thus reinforcing Morocco’s foreign policy stance in this regard, according to the same source.
The committee seeks to promote creativity and cultural exchange among African cultures, organize cultural events, and designate African Capitals of Culture among the region’s countries.
Designated African Capital of Culture for 2023, the kingdom’s capital, Rabat hosted major cultural events showcasing the richness of African culture.
