A 5-magnitude earthquake hit Kahramanmaraş province in southeastern Türkiye at 09:31 local time on Saturday, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported, citing the country’s disaster authorities.
Kahramanmaraş province, with a history of seismological activity, was the epicenter of two major earthquakes earlier in 2023. The region is still experiencing aftershocks and smaller tremors as it continues to recover from those catastrophic events.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers in the vicinity of the city of Evry, located 50 kilometers from Gaziantep city, which has a population of 1.5 million residents.
Despite the considerable magnitude of the earthquake, AFAD has reported no significant negative consequences, damage, or injuries.
On February 6, 2023, two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 rocked Kahramanmaraş province, with a nine-hour interval between the two events.
The Turkish authorities described the earthquake as “the disaster of the century,” with over 53,000 fatalities and more than 107,000 injuries recorded.
