Amid a serious ongoing water crisis in Morocco, the General Directorate of Water under the Ministry of Equipment and Water said in a report published on Thursday that the reservoirs of major dams in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region now contain about 885 million cubic meters of water.
With a combined capacity of more than 1.721 billion cubic meters, this represents a fill rate of just over half (51.43%), a significant improvement over last year at the same time when the reservoirs contained only about 756.87 million cubic meters (43.96% of their capacity).
In the Loukkos area, the Oued El Makhazine Dam (located in Larache province), the largest dam in the region, has recorded a reservoir level of 517.8 million cubic meters, or about 76.9% of its capacity. Meanwhile, the Dar Khrofa Dam’s reservoir has only 99.3 million cubic meters, about 20.7% of its capacity.
For the 9 April Dam in the Tanger-Assilah prefecture, the reservoir level is around 69.5 million cubic meters, equating to a 23.2% fill rate. The Ibn Battouta Dam has achieved a fill rate of 58.7% with 17.1 million cubic meters.
In Tetouan province, the Nakhla Dam has a fill rate of 59.1% with 2.5 million cubic meters, while the Acharif Al Idrissi Dam has reached a fill rate of 89% with 108.3 million cubic meters.
In the M’diq-Fnideq prefecture, the Smir Dam now is at 77.8% of capacity with 30.3 million cubic meters. The Moulay El Hassan Ben El Mahdi Dam, located in Fahs-Anjra province, is at 55.4% with 13 million cubic meters.
The report also noted that the Tanger Méditerranée Dam in Fahs-Anjra province is now at 71.2% with 15.7 million cubic meters, while the Abdelkrim Al Khattabi Dam in Al Hoceima province is only at 8% with 0.9 million cubic meters.
