Moroccan architect Aziza Chaouni received the prestigious IMA Design Award for her prototype of a “sustainable earthquake-resistant house” during a ceremony held by the Arab World Institute (IMA) on Wednesday evening.
Developed by her firm Aziza Chaouni Projects (ACP), Chaouni’s project was recognized in the “Impact” category for its potential to address housing challenges in earthquake-affected areas.
Designed in response to the September 8, 2023 earthquake centered in Al Haouz, Morocco, the prototype dwelling is intended to provide a cost-effective, durable, and quick-to-construct solution for displaced populations.
“Our prototype is a sustainable, earthquake-resistant house made from compressed earth bricks,” Chaouni explained. “It aims to offer those affected by the earthquake a dignified, comfortable, and secure living space that can be built on a small budget and in a short timeframe.”
Chaouni’s team developed the project in collaboration with Moroccan authorities and local communities in the village of Talat N’Yaaqoub. The project involved researching traditional construction techniques and working closely with the local population, including children, women, and men.
The result is a three-courtyard house constructed with Lego-style compressed earth bricks and vaulted ceilings, requiring no mortar. It also includes a system for treating and recycling wastewater.
Chaouni dedicated the award to the victims of the September 8 earthquake and the volunteers who supported the project. “The earthquake brought an unprecedented wave of solidarity to our Kingdom, and this sustainable house is a testament to that spirit,” she said.
Her team is now working on transferring the lessons learned from this prototype to a new initiative in the Al Haouz region. The upcoming project, named “The House of Stars,” is spearheaded by the local NGO Amal Biladi and aims to serve as a community center for the children and youth of Tajgalt, another village impacted by the quake.
In addition to her design firm, Chaouni is an associate professor of architecture at the University of Toronto. Since founding Aziza Chaouni Projects in 2011, she has focused on sustainable architecture, landscape design, urban planning, and construction, often collaborating with local artisans.
The IMA Design Award, established in 2023, celebrates emerging and established designers from the Arab world. The award showcases craftsmanship, innovative materials, and creative talent in categories such as “Emerging Talent,” “Established Talent,” and “Impact Award,” along with a jury prize.
