Carte.ma, a platform founded in 2014 offering high-definition street view services, has extended its coverage to over ten of Morocco’s major cities, according to the company website.
Developed by Marouane Lamharzi Alaoui, a Moroccan computer scientist and tech entrepreneur, the platform provides virtual city tours in Morocco and valuable data for citizens and businesses, according to the technology publication We Are Tech Africa.
The platform utilizes a vehicle-mounted camera system with geo-referenced mapping capabilities, providing a cost-effective solution for large-area mapping.
From 2015 to 2016, the platform mapped over 10,000 kilometers of public roads in five to seven Moroccan cities.
Carte.ma has to date generated more than one million panoramic images, covering 104,000 kilometers of roads at five-meter intervals.
This extensive coverage allows users to explore cities throughout Morocco and discover the top picks to explore.
Lamharzi Alaoui graduated from the engineering school, École Nationale Supérieure des Mines, in Rabat in 2009 with a diploma in computer science. He also interned at Morocco’s Directorate of Hydraulic Developments in 2007 and the Ministry of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment in 2008.
The Moroccan founder began his professional journey as a Development Engineer at Dyar Al Mansour, a subsidiary of Morocco’s investment arm, Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion (CDG), where he worked from 2008 to 2009. He later joined “Netik”, a digital marketing and consulting agency, before working as a support engineer at “Percall Développement”, a French IT company, until 2014.
