The Casablanca police, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), seized over 9.7 million units of illegal firecrackers and fireworks on Tuesday.
Illegal fireworks are a threat to public safety and property, the National Police (DGSN) announced in a press release yesterday.
Authorities arrested two men allegedly involved in an international criminal network engaged in trafficking and smuggling restricted explosives from overseas, the DGSN added.
Thorough searches revealed a record quantity of fireworks of varying sizes and types, which can present a substantial risk to public safety. Three vehicles believed to be used for the transportation and trafficking of illegal pyrotechnics were also confiscated.
The suspects are now in custody pending further investigation under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office, looking at who may also be connected to these criminal activities, with an eye on regional and global links.
