At least 12 migrants died on Tuesday when a boat carrying dozens capsized in the English Channel, according to French media reports.
Rescue teams are working to save over 70 people attempting to cross from France to Britain.
Due to the severity of the incident, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin plans to visit the site later in the afternoon, CNews television reported.
The British and French governments continue to address the increasing numbers of illegal migrants in the region. In the past seven days, over 2,000 people have crossed into Britain on small boats, according to UK government figures.
Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer vowed to intensify efforts to dismantle smuggling routes in the English Channel. The Channel, known for its strong currents and harsh climate, poses extreme dangers for those making the crossing on small boats. As one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, it separates Southern England from northern France.
