Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of the Congo Basin of Congo, Arlette Soudan-Nonault highlighted Morocco’s significant achievements in environmental protection and ecosystem management to the press, following a meeting with national climate and environmental stakeholders in Rabat on Thursday.
The minister, who also serves as the executive secretary of the Congo Basin Climate Commission (CCBC), specifically commended Morocco’s efforts in “sustainable development, solar energy, and coastal protection,” reported Morocco’s Press Agency MAP.
“These successful experiences in energy transition are noteworthy and should be leveraged by other African countries,” she said, expressing her country’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Morocco and promoting the exchange of experiences and expertise.
Zakaria Hachlaf, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, highlighted Morocco’s early and proactive commitment to climate transition, noting the country’s various initiatives to achieve a green, resilient, and low-carbon economy by 2030.
Hachlaf pointed out the progress in operationalizing the three African Climate Commissions, including the CCBC and the Sahel Climate Commission (CCRS). He also noted significant advancements in institutionalizing these bodies and establishing the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin (F2BC).
The secretary-general also mentioned the completed feasibility study as a precursor to developing and implementing the “Climate Investment Plan” (2020-2030), which includes nearly 300 national and regional projects focused on adaptation and mitigation.
Members of Soudan-Nonault’s delegation, representatives from government ministries, both houses of parliament, the private sector, and civil society, participated in the meeting.
Soudan-Nonault’s visit, leading a high-level delegation, is part of an official mission to the countries of the CCBC. This commission is one of three African climate commissions established during the first African Summit on Continental Co-Emergence, held at the initiative of King Mohammed VI along with COP22 in Marrakech.
