The Moroccan Lawyers Club (CAM) filed a complaint in Paris against Algerian radio commentator Mehdi Ghezzar for defamation and incitement to hate.
This follows Ghezzar’s offensive remarks on the Algerian channel “AL24 News,” which led to his dismissal from RMC’s “Les Grandes Gueules.”
CAM accuses Ghezzar of damaging Morocco’s honor and inciting hate, violating press freedom laws.
The damaging false claims Ghezzar made suggested Moroccans are barred from expressing solidarity with Gaza, risking imprisonment and mosque bans.
CAM refutes this, noting that support for Palestinians is common and widely tolerated in Morocco.
Ghezzar also made comments, accusing Royal Advisor André Azoulay of enforcing non-existent bans on pro-Gaza displays. The Algerian commentator, also wrongly labeled Azoulay as Israeli and blamed him for imaginary measures, which CAM condemned as dangerous and provoking anti-semitic prejudices.
Additionally, Ghezzar accused Morocco of spreading “Zionist propaganda” and derogatorily called it the “Thailand of Africa.”
The accumulation of remarks, implying criminality and moral corruption, sparked outrage in Morocco and beyond.
RMC swiftly distanced itself from Ghezzar, ending their collaboration and denouncing his hateful comments.
This case occurs amid rising diplomatic tensions between Morocco and Algeria.
CAM aims to protect Morocco’s dignity and honor on the international stage through this lawsuit. The complaint signaled that the legal process could have significant repercussions, as it is committed to pursuing this case to its conclusion, to defend Morocco’s image and interests.
Upcoming steps in the legal process likely include hearings and investigations to establish facts and responsibilities.
The case has drawn international attention, with human rights organizations calling for a thorough investigation.
CAM has pledged full cooperation with French and international authorities to clarify the matter.
