The Civil Guard Maritime Service in Ceuta, in collaboration with the Special Underwater Activities Group (GEAS), recovered the body of a young Moroccan man on Wednesday near Ceuta’s coast, in the area known as the “1,000 Steps,” Spanish media “El Independiente” reported.
The recovery follows an increased level of monitoring of the waters near Ceuta due to an influx of illegal migrants attempting to reach the city by swimming. The victim allegedly died trying to reach Europe, the tragedy marks the fifth body to be recovered in the Ceuta waters this month.
At approximately 8:15 p.m., a team retrieved the body and transported it to the Civil Guard Maritime Service base.
The body was subsequently transferred to the Ceuta Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (IML) for an autopsy to ascertain the precise cause of death.
The identification and confirmation of origin for the body are still in progress, the media said.
