Customs authorities in Morocco’s Atlantic city, Essaouira, destroyed over 10 tons of cannabis resin on Wednesday, that had been confiscated by the Royal Gendarmerie in the nearby town of Ounagha, Morocco’s News Agency (MAP) reported.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Essaouira Court of Appeals oversaw the operation.
Abdelbasset El Imami, Customs and Indirect Taxes Liquidator at the Essaouira office stated that “the authorities discovered the drugs, hidden in 245 bags, in a trailer of a truck following an accident near the town of Ounagha.”
He highlighted the significance of the recent large-scale seizure and subsequent destruction of illicit substances, which exemplifies the ongoing commitment to combating drug trafficking in the province.
He commended the collaboration between different services and urged sustained vigilance and coordination in preventing the trafficking of narcotics.
The relevant authorities have initiated an investigation into the alleged smuggling of the illicit substance and to identify the individuals involved, according to El Imami.
Customs officials, local authority representatives, members of the Royal Gendarmerie, health sector personnel, and civil protection officers attended the massive incineration operation.
