Under the King’s leadership, Morocco has undergone profound transformations, solidifying its position on the international stage while pursuing ambitious national projects that have reshaped the country’s landscape, wrote Khaled Hamade, Executive Director of the Observatory of Geopolitical Studies (OGS).
In a recent policy analysis, Hamade explained that over the past quarter-century, Morocco has made substantial strides in various domains, from foreign policy to domestic development.
“The 25th anniversary of King Mohammed VI’s reign is an opportunity to celebrate a Morocco undergoing significant transformation, both nationally and internationally,” wrote Hamade.
Key achievements of King Mohammed VI’s reign have been the diversification and expansion of Morocco’s international partnerships. “Under the reign of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has significantly expanded and diversified its international partnerships,” Hamade noted.
Traditionally aligned with Europe, Morocco has successfully cultivated new relationships with countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The strategy has enhanced Morocco’s influence on the global stage, attracting foreign investments and fostering new economic and cultural collaborations.
Diplomacy and the Sahara issue
King Mohammed VI’s reign has also been marked by a proactive and resolute approach to diplomacy. “The Kingdom has shown great determination in defending its strategic interests,” Hamade explained. Morocco’s diplomatic efforts have been particularly notable in managing regional crises and combating terrorism, positioning the country as a key player in promoting peace and stability in the region.
At the core of Morocco’s foreign policy is the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, a subject that has seen intensified diplomatic efforts under King Mohammed VI. “The issue of the Moroccan Sahara remains at the heart of the Kingdom’s foreign policy,” Hamadé explained. The King’s persistent efforts have led to growing international recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, bolstered by the support of numerous countries and international organizations.
Beyond foreign policy
King Mohammed VI’s reign has been characterized by a series of ambitious national projects. Among them is the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, a strategic initiative aimed at transporting Nigerian gas through Morocco to Europe. “The project will diversify Morocco’s energy sources, enhance the region’s energy security, and stimulate economic development,” Hamadé said.
Morocco has also emerged as a critical economic and financial hub for Africa, thanks to significant investments in infrastructure. “Morocco has become the logistical platform connecting Africa, Europe, and the rest of the world,” Hamade noted.
Education reform has been a cornerstone of King Mohammed VI’s agenda, with efforts focused on modernizing school infrastructure and improving the quality of education. “Considerable efforts have been made to modernize school infrastructure, improve the quality of education, and make education accessible to all,” Hamade pointed out.
Under King Mohammed VI, Morocco has invested heavily in sports infrastructure, preparing the country to host major international competitions. “Morocco has invested heavily in sports infrastructure, modernizing stadiums, constructing new complexes, and developing world-class facilities,” Hamade said.
