A European tourist vacationing in Morocco is the first person to be admitted to hospital with suspected monkeypox (Mpox), media outlet Ceuta TV reported on Monday.
The man, whose nationality remains unknown, has since been transferred to the University Hospital of Ceuta, in which he remains in isolation.
The transfer necessitated extensive documentation and authorization due to his status as an EU citizen hospitalized outside the EU, resulting in a transfer delay which was originally scheduled for August 20.
The man was taken to Ceuta University Hospital after showing symptoms consistent with Mpox. Health officials are awaiting confirmation of the diagnosis from the Carlos III Institute in Madrid.
The situation remains under control with strict precautions in place to minimize contact and ensure safety, according to media reports.
The patient’s precise age, nationality, and current health status remain unknown. It is also unclear whether he will be treated in Ceuta or transferred to his home country, the same source noted.
