Palestine will seek BRICS membership after the organization’s October summit in Kazan, where one session will focus on Gaza, Russian Agency TASS said on Monday.
Palestinian ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal announced the plans during a news conference, stating that after its first participation in the summit, Palestine will apply to join BRICS, an alliance named for its founding members, Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
Russian President Vladimir Putin assured that a session of the summit would be dedicated to Palestine, which Nofal described as a positive signal of support for the Palestinian cause.
The invitation to the summit represents a significant message amidst ongoing violence in Gaza, emphasizing Palestine’s desire for peace and development.
Putin previously invited Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to attend the BRICS summit, which will include member nations Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
In January, BRICS expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE. Russia began its year-long BRICS presidency on January 1, 2024.
