Moroccan arms control agencies received recognition in Cairo on Sunday, at the Arab League’s headquarters, for their leading role in promoting cooperation between the Arab League and the European Union (EU) to combat trafficking and illegal distribution of small arms and light weapons among Arab League Member States, Morocco’s News Agency (MAP) reported on Monday.
“The recognition highlights Morocco’s active role in the Arab League-EU collaboration to address the illicit arms trade in the region,” MAP reported.
Morocco, along with Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, proved instrumental in the second phase of this multi-year cooperation project, exemplifying its leadership in regional security and dedication to international initiatives to control the trade of illegal arms.
The recognition of Moroccan efforts also underscores the value of collaboration between regional and international entities in addressing global security challenges.
The kingdom received particular acknowledgment for facilitating pivotal initiatives during the project’s second phase. Notable contributions include the inaugural regional workshop in Tangier in 2022 and numerous training sessions in Rabat.
“These efforts have significantly enhanced the capabilities of Arab League states in addressing the challenges of illicit arms trafficking,” the same source said.
The honor reflects the country’s “leadership in regional security and its commitment to international efforts to curb the illegal arms trade,” MAP stated.
The two-day meeting in Cairo, held by the Arab League’s Directorate of Arms Control and Disarmament in partnership with the EU, Interpol, and the World Customs Organization, centered on assessing the advancement of the project’s second phase and exploring potential avenues for future collaboration.
