A 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck Portugal early Monday, and was felt as far south as Casablanca, Morocco, with no reported casualties or damage.
The tremor occurred at 05:11 local time (04:11 GMT) with its epicenter located offshore, approximately 60 km west of the port city of Sines, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) confirmed.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.4 magnitude earthquake in the same region, at a depth of 17.5 km.
Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported the quake was also felt in parts of Spain, particularly Huelva, as well as in Morocco.
“There have been no personal or material damages reported so far,” said André Fernandes, the national commander of Portugal’s civil protection, during a morning press conference.
On Sept. 8, a 7-magnitude earthquake hit central Morocco, and caused almost three thousnad deaths, mainly in Al Haouz and Taroudant regions.
