Morocco’d Authorities, on Monday, recovered the body of a young woman who went missing after being swept away by floodwaters in the Ighrem N’Ougdal commune of Ouarzazate province in South-Central Morocco. The body was discovered on the same day near the village of Tazadout, following a search effort that spanned over two days.
The incident took place after severe storms struck the region on Friday, causing floods in a local river. Eyewitnesses reported that the young woman was the daughter of another victim whose body was found early Saturday morning.
Local authorities, in addition to communal services, auxiliary forces, civil protection units, and the Royal Gendarmerie, launched a search operation immediately after the floods. The death toll from this disaster now stands at two.
The victims, a mother and her daughter, were working in agricultural fields when they were overtaken by the floodwaters.
The intense weather caused water levels to rise significantly in Azilal, Tinghir, and Ouarzazate, leading to substantial damage to infrastructure. Ahmed Mezouz, head of the Ighrem N’Ougdal province, told 2M that the downpour began around 3 p.m. (GMT+1) on Friday and intensified throughout the evening. The storm also brought heavy hail, resulting in severe flooding in local valleys and water channels.
The body of the young woman was discovered early Saturday morning on the banks of the Imassine River following an extensive search operation that continued from Friday evening to Saturday morning.
In addition to the fatalities, the heavy rain has severely impacted the region’s roadways and agricultural fields. Mudslides have blocked several roads, complicating access for local authorities and emergency responders.
