Heavy rains and ensuing floods claimed the life of a woman in the Ighram Noukdal town in Ouarzazate province, in south-central Morocco on Friday, according to a report from TV channel 2M.
Rescue efforts are currently underway to locate another missing young woman after the torrential downpour.
Several areas in southeastern Morocco experienced severe flooding overnight following heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
The intense weather caused water levels to rise in Azilal, Tinghir, and Ouarzazate, leading to substantial damage to infrastructure.
Ahmed Mezouz, head of the Ighram Noukdal province, told 2M that the downpour began around 3 p.m. (GMT+1) on Friday and intensified throughout the evening.
The storm brought large amounts of hail, leading to severe flooding in local valleys and water channels.
The body of the victim was discovered early Saturday morning on the banks of the Imassine River following an extensive search operation that lasted from Friday evening to Saturday morning.
In addition to the fatality, the heavy rain has severely impacted the region’s roadways and agricultural fields. Mudslides have blocked several roads, complicating access for local authorities and emergency responders.
Local authorities are working to clear the affected routes and ensure the movement of emergency services, including auxiliary forces and rescue teams.
