The United Arab Emirates has mediated its seventh prisoner exchange this year between Russia and Ukraine, resulting in the release of 230 prisoners-115 for each country-, UAE’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a press release on Saturday. This brings the total number of exchanged prisoners to 1,788.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its gratitude to the governments of Russia and Ukraine for their cooperation, highlighting that the UAE supports diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
This successful mediation, which follows a similar achievement a month ago, underscores “the strong friendship and partnership between the UAE and both countries,” the ministry noted.
The ministry added in the press release that the UAE reiterated its commitment to supporting all efforts and initiatives to achieve a peaceful resolution to the conflict, emphasizing that “dialogue and de-escalation are crucial to alleviating the humanitarian impact of the crisis.”
Since the beginning of the year, the UAE has facilitated six prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine. In December 2022, the country also mediated the exchange of two prisoners between the United States and Russia.
