More than 41,000 new companies were established in Morocco in the first five months of 2024, according to recent data from the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC).
The majority of these new businesses, 29,481 in total, were created by legal entities, while 11,393 were established by individual entrepreneurs.
The commerce sector leads the charge, accounting for 35% of all new businesses. The construction and public works sector (known locally as BTP) follows with 18.9% and various service industries closely trail with 18.8%.
Other noteworthy sectors include transportation at 8%, industry at 7%, hospitality at 5.5%, and information and communication technologies at 2.6%.
Financial activities, along with agriculture and fishing, also made modest contributions at 2.1% and 1.5%, respectively.
Regarding the geographical distribution, Casablanca-Settat, Morocco’s economic powerhouse, remains the top destination for new businesses, with 12,721 companies established by the end of May.
The northern region of Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima came second with 5,837 new businesses, while Rabat-Sale-Kénitra ranks third with 4,691.
Other regions seeing significant entrepreneurial activity include Marrakech-Safi with 4,686 new businesses, Fes-Meknes with 2,848, and Souss-Massa with 2,784.
Meanwhile, the southern regions of Guelmim-Oued Noun and Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab recorded the fewest new businesses, with 305 and 674, respectively.
In terms of business structure, the single-member limited liability company (SARL AU) continues to be the preferred legal form, representing 65.2% of all new entities.
Limited liability companies (SARL) make up 34.3%, while public limited companies (SA) account for just 0.2%.
