A 22-year-old Moroccan man died seven weeks after sustaining a broken ankle in a street attack in London’s West End, according to the BBC.
The deceased, Taha Errami, was injured during the early hours of June 1 on Shaftesbury Avenue and passed away on July 23.
Malachi Wilson, 32; Devonta Rose, 20; and Dennis Kaantharasan, 25, appeared via video link at the Old Bailey, facing charges of murder. They did not enter pleas during the preliminary hearing and were remanded in custody until their next court appearance in November.
The news outlet said that the attack began with an altercation involving Wilson, with Rose and Kaantharasan joining in later. Errami, who reported being punched and stamped on, declined ambulance assistance and went to St Thomas’s Hospital for treatment of his broken ankle. The incident was not captured on CCTV.
On July 6, while traveling to London by train, Errami became seriously ill and was transported to St Mary’s Hospital, where he was found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. He died on July 23 from complications related to his injury, including deep vein thrombosis.
Prosecutor Caroline Carberry KC stated that the police initially investigated the attack as a possible robbery, but the motive remains unknown.
Judge Rebecca Trowler KC scheduled a plea hearing for November 4 and set a provisional trial date for May 19 of the following year.
