ISIS has claimed responsibility for a knife attack that left three people dead and eight others injured in the western German city of Solingen on Friday evening, according to converging news reports.
The group made the announcement on its Telegram channel on Saturday, stating that the attack was carried out by one of its members as an act of “revenge for Muslims in Palestine and everywhere.”
The attack took place in the Fronhof, a market square where live bands were performing as part of Solingen’s 650th-anniversary celebrations. The area was crowded with festival-goers when the assailant launched the attack.
German authorities have yet to confirm the extent of the attacker’s ties to ISIS, as the group provided no direct evidence to support its claim.
In the aftermath of the attack, police launched a large-scale manhunt for the perpetrator. On Saturday, they detained a 15-year-old, who is now being questioned to determine any potential connection to the attacker.
Authorities have not yet disclosed further details about the suspect or the nature of the investigation.
