Morocco set a milestone record in blueberry export after reaching 67,300 tons during the 2023/24 season, a 25% increase from the previous season, according to “East Fruit.”
Spain, though still top of the market for Moroccan blueberries, saw its share decline from 80% to 30% over the past few years.
However, exports to Spain grew by 11% in the 2023/24 season, reaching 20,100 tons. Other European markets also showed strong growth, with shipments to the United Kingdom increasing by almost one-third to 14,600 tons.
The Export to the Netherlands surged by 42%, totaling 14,500 tons, while Germany saw a 25% increase to 4,300 tons, and France experienced a 19% rise to 3,900 tons.
These gains highlight Morocco’s expanding influence in European markets for fresh blueberries.
Beyond Europe, Morocco’s blueberry exports reached 1,800 tons in the Middle East, with key buyers including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
In North America, shipments to the United States amounted to 360 tons, while Canada received 900 tons of Moroccan blueberries.
In Southeast Asia, Morocco tripled its blueberry exports over the past four years, jumping from 450 tons in 2019 to 1,500 tons in 2023.
The region is now one of the fastest-growing markets for fresh berry imports, with Morocco ranking among the top five suppliers.
In 2023, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia imported about 96% of Morocco’s blueberries destined for Southeast Asia.
Moroccan blueberry exports to Southeast Asia broke records last year, doubling to 1,400 tons compared to 2022.
Exports generally occur from February to May, during winter and early spring.
The “Asia Fruit Logistica” exhibition, scheduled for September 4-6, will feature detailed discussions on Moroccan blueberry export opportunities in Southeast Asia.
This new export record solidifies Morocco’s position as a leading global supplier of fresh blueberries, with its influence extending across Europe, the Middle East, North America, and Southeast Asia.
