Morocco has secured the top spot at the 2024 African Mathematics Olympiad, a prestigious competition held at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 10-20.
The Moroccan team scored an unprecedented score of 201 points, setting a new record for the highest score ever obtained in the Olympiad’s history.
The national team’s historic win placed them ahead of Algeria, which finished in second place with 186 points, and Tunisia, which earned 133 points to take third place.
The results were announced by Morocco’s Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports.
Moroccan students excelled individually as well, bringing home a total of six medals (three gold and three silver).
Yacine Kamouh from the Casablanca-Settat region achieved a perfect score of 42/42 points, securing one of the gold medals.
Joining him in the gold category were Adam Mahdan from Souss-Massa, who scored 35/42 points, and Sami Moussaoui from the Oriental region, who earned 33/42 points.
Silver medalists included Sarah Al-Masnawi from Casablanca-Settat with 31/42 points, Sakina Brransi from Rabat-Salé-Kenitra region with 30/42 points, and Lina Chaker from the same region with the same score.
All three silver medalists also won gold medals in the competition’s female category (PAMO Girls).
The Olympiad featured participants from 27 countries, with each country consisting of a team of six students (three girls and three boys). The competition included two rigorous exams, each lasting four and a half hours, spread over two consecutive days.
Morocco’s Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports extended heartfelt congratulations to the students for their remarkable achievement.
The ministry also welcomed the team’s coaches and families for their unwavering support and dedication.
