The 18th Laalaoui Festival, which celebrates local cultural heritage, began on Tuesday evening in Debdou, located in the Taourirt province in Eastern Morocco.
Under the theme “Debdou, Civilization and History,” the two-day festival is organized by the Ain Sbilia Association for Popular Arts, in partnership with the Oriental Development Agency, the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication – Culture Sector, and supported by the Hassan II Foundation for Moroccans Living Abroad.
The festival seeks to showcase the cultural and artistic potential of the region, promote Arab-Amazigh art, present engaging artistic and creative activities, and encourage cultural tourism.
Khalid Berrada, representing the Regional Directorate of the Culture Sector, pointed out the festival’s role in highlighting the cultural richness essential for development projects that promote societal progress and prosperity.
Berrada stressed the importance of preserving intangible cultural heritage, including local folklore, and reinforcing the authentic customs and traditions of the locals.
Ali Hamdaoui, President of the Ain Sbilia Association, underscored the festival’s goals of promoting cultural and artistic activities, particularly music and folk arts, and showcasing Debdou’s rich tourism potential.
Hamdaoui noted that “the festival is part of the celebrations for the 71st anniversary of the Revolution of the King and the People,” which highlights the national spirit and the importance of safeguarding the nation’s integrity. It also aligns with National Migrants’ Day to strengthen the connection of Moroccan expatriates to their culture.
The opening ceremony featured tributes to notable individuals, including members of the Moroccan diaspora, for their contributions to cultural, artistic, and sporting fields. The event also included traditional music and dance performances by groups from various Moroccan cities.
The festival’s program includes varied cultural, artistic, intellectual activities, and a scientific symposium on aspects of the region’s history. It also features a cultural and tourist excursion to showcase Debdou’s historical monuments, customs, and traditions, as well as a musical evening with performances by artists and folklore groups.
