The United States topped the final medal tally at the Paris Olympics on Sunday, with a total of 126 medals, and tied with China at 40 gold medals each.
The US secured 40 gold medals, 44 silver, and 42 bronze, placing it at the top of the leaderboard. Its success was driven in part by the victory of its women’s basketball team in the final match.
China ranked second in the medal tally with 91 medals, including 27 silver and 24 bronze.
Japan’s Olympic roster placed third with 45 medals, including 20 gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze.
Australia came in fourth with 53 medals, 18 of which were gold, 19 silver, and 16 bronze.
France, the host country, placed fifth in the competition, having won 64 medals in total, including 16 gold, 26 silver, and 22 bronze.
