Morocco’s national police (DGSN), in collaboration with the Territory Surveillance Agency (DGST), successfully thwarted a drug smuggling attempt of 15,105 pills of the restricted substance Rivotril and arrested three individuals allegedly involved in drug trafficking, according to a security source.
The suspects, aged between 22 and 36, included two with criminal records and are believed to be involved in a drug trafficking network. They were apprehended at a highway toll booth, near Salé, while heading from a city in northern Morocco.
In addition to the illegal substances, police seized MAD 15,850 believed to be proceeds from drug-related activities.
The suspects are now in custody under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office which is looking at other individuals who may also be connected to these criminal activities, with an eye on regional and global links.
Rivotril, also known as clonazepam, is a pharmaceutical drug primarily used to treat seizures, panic attacks, and some movement disorders. It is also illegally consumed as a recreational drug due to its soothing and euphoric effects, commonly leading to misuse and addiction.
