The African Union (AU) commended Morocco’s national football team, the Atlas Lions, for their “historic achievement” at the Paris Olympics Games in a statement shared on X on Friday.
In congratulating Morocco on their recent victory, the AU highlighted the historic significance of the team’s achievement in securing a bronze medal for both Moroccan and African football.
“Morocco made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Atlas Lions are Olympic bronze medalists. This win cements Morocco’s status as a football powerhouse and is a massive achievement for African football,” the post read.
The post featured photos of Moroccan players proudly displaying the national flag, which symbolizes shared pride and joy among Africans.
The AU expressed optimism about the potential for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, of which Morocco is a host country along with Spain and Portugal. “With this momentum, hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2030 looks even more promising,” the statement read.
In another earlier post, the AU similarly celebrated Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali, who secured the gold medal and “delivered a historic performance to become the first man to successfully defend his 3000m steeplechase title since 1936.”
“You are a true Champion,” the AU wrote.
The continental body also recognized the achievements of other African champions at the Paris Olympics.
