Spain defeated France 5-3 on Friday to win the gold medal in a thrilling men’s Olympic football final with two goals from substitute Sergio Camello in extra time.
Spain appeared to be on their way to triumph at the Parc des Princes in Paris, recovering from an early goal to lead 3-1 at halftime.
Enzo Millot put France ahead, but Fermin Lopez’s brace and an Alex Baena free kick turned the final on its head.
However, France mounted a spectacular comeback, with Maghnes Akliouche equalizing before Jean-Philippe Mateta converted a stoppage-time penalty awarded after a VAR review.
That sent the final to extra time, where Rayo Vallecano striker Camello emerged as the hero, giving Spain the lead again in the 100th minute of an enthralling game and then sprinting away to secure the triumph at the end.
Spain, who clinched silver medals in 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has won Olympic men’s football gold for the second time, following their success in Barcelona in 1992 with a group that included Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique.
Forty years after their victory in Los Angeles, France had hoped for a second gold of their own, but they had to make do with silver.
After their success at the Euros in Germany last month, the victory caps off a fantastic summer for Spain’s men on the field. They just defeated France in the final to win the Under-19 Euros as well.
Henry’s team can, nevertheless, walk away from the memorable game with their heads high.
On Thursday, Morocco won the bronze medal after crushing Egypt 6-0 at La Beaujoire Stadium in Nantes.
