Adam Peaty, an English Olympic swimmer, said that other athletes found worms in the food served at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
In an interview with the British newspaper i, the six-time Olympic medallist criticized the catering services at the Olympic Village, stating that they do not meet the standards expected for elite athletes.
Peaty contrasted the current situation with the previous Olympics, noting, “In Tokyo, the food was incredible. Rio was incredible.”
“But this time around? There weren’t enough protein options, and there were long queues with waits of up to 30 minutes due to a lack of a proper queueing system,” he added.
As part of their sustainability goals, the organizers of the Paris Games had committed to making 60% of the food served to athletes meatless and one-third plant-based.
Peaty, however, feels this emphasis on sustainability has negatively impacted the athletes’ needs. “I want meat; I need meat to perform, and that’s what I eat at home. So why should I change?” he said.
He also expressed frustration with the quality of the fish, saying: “I like my fish, but people are finding worms in it. It’s just not good enough. We’re looking at the best athletes in the world, and we’re not feeding them the best.”
The Paris Olympics have faced several challenges, including backlash from athletes. On Tuesday, the marathon swimming training session was canceled due to concerns over the water quality in the Seine.
In addition, another athlete reportedly slept outdoors next to a park bench to protest the subpar accommodations provided.
