Moroccan advocacy group Movement for Morocco’s Environment 2050 is calling for a protest on Sunday against the planting of palm trees in urban areas.
In a statement on Facebook, the group said that they are resuming their advocacy campaign aiming to stop the planting of palm trees in Moroccan cities, and to replace them with other trees.
The movement emphasized that “trees have become an essential and urgent component in Moroccan cities and villages, given the difficult climatic conditions the country is experiencing.”
“For the first time in the history of activism in Morocco, we will stand up for the tree, for our lives, and for the lives of future generations,” the statement adds.
The call for a protest comes a year after the movement submitted a petition to authorities demanding a halt to the planting of palm trees, especially the Roman palm, which has become a common sight in all Moroccan cities.
