France’s Minister of Culture Rachida Dati hailed the historic move of the French Republic’s President, Emmanuel Macron, in recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
In a letter to King Mohammed VI, Macron stated that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”
Dati, who is of Moroccan origin, tweeted, “I am honored to be present in Morocco on this historic day for French-Moroccan relations. This course of history is essential and irreversible, and we are all its architects.”
The French minister, who was attending festivities marking the 25th anniversary of the Moroccan Sovereign’s coronation, wrote: “Paying tribute to King Mohammed VI and President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron for their ambitious visions for our two peoples.”
Macron’s letter to King Mohammed VI “confirms Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern regions,” she told the press following the Throne Day reception on Tuesday in M’diq.
Citing Morocco and France’s long-standing friendship, Dati said she is confident that Paris’ new position will promote key strategic collaborations between Morocco, France, and the European Union.
