King Mohammed VI welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over its Sahara.
Yesterday, on the occasion of Throne Day, Macron sent a letter to King Mohammed VI, reaffirming France’s support for Morocco’s autonomy plan presented in 2007, while considering that “the present and future of the Sahara lie within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”
In a letter addressed to Macron on Wednesday, the monarch expressed his thanks to the French president for his best wishes and commitment to strengthening partnership between the two countries.
“I fully appreciate your country’s clear support for Morocco’s sovereignty over this part of its territory, the resolute French support for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty to settle this regional dispute, thereby establishing the plan proposed by Morocco, since 2007, as the only basis for achieving it,” the letter read.
The king called for cooperation between Morocco and France to “reach a solution that, within the framework of the United Nations, fully respects Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara,” seeking “to put an end to a conflict inherited from another era.”
He also commended the current state of bilateral relations “built over decades” and called for further reinforcement of these ties. “Promising prospects are opening up for our two countries in many strategic sectors, making it possible to strengthen the exceptional partnership built over decades on friendship and trust.”
The sovereign concluded his message with extending an invitation to Macron for a State visit to the kingdom, which will be arranged through diplomatic channels.
