Morocco’s National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) is warning of a “medium” to “extreme” risk of forest fires in several provinces of Morocco beginning today through July 31, according to a predictive map published on Sunday.
Based on a comprehensive analysis of data related to forest and flora cover, flammability, weather forecasts, and topographical features, ANEF designated ten provinces as extreme-risk areas (red warnings): Chefchaouen, Taza, Taroudant, Oujda-Angad, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Ifrane, Khenifra, Sefrou, and Guercif.
The agency designated six provinces as high-risk (orange warning) areas: Tangier-Assilah, Al Hoceima, Ouezzane, Driouch, Taounate, and Essaouira as potential targets for wildfire.
It designated ten cities with medium (yellow warning) forest fire risk: Fahs-Anjra, Larache, Tetouan, M’Diq-Fnideq, Rabat, Salé, Skhirate-Temara, Kenitra, Berkane, and Nador provinces.
ANEF is urging residents and workers in or near forests, as well as visitors, to exercise caution, avoid activities that could start fires, and immediately report all smoke or suspicious behavior to local authorities.
