A video of a British police officer stamping on a man’s head during an arrest at Manchester Airport in England has sparked allegations of police brutality and a formal inquiry.
Following the footage, which was shot by an observer on Tuesday, police suspended one of the officers involved and forwarded the case to an independent police complaints agency.
The video depicted a chaotic scenario in an airport parking lot when multiple armed officers with tasers held down two criminals.
The two individuals were detained on charges of assault on an emergency personnel, affray, and hindering law enforcement.
The incident escalated when an officer stomped on a man’s head while he lay face down on the floor. The second detainee appeared to have been hit in the head by an officer.
According to a statement from Greater Manchester Police (GMP), the video depicted “an event that is truly shocking, and that people are rightly extremely concerned about.”
Police responded to allegations of an assault, and three policemen were attacked, one of whom had a fractured nose. However, the alleged attack on the officers was not captured in the footage that circulated online.
A lawyer for the claimants said a scan revealed one of them had a cyst on his brain and that his medical condition had deteriorated overnight.
The male claimant had been released on bail, according to police, and their medical status was not disclosed.
