The ongoing heatwave in the kingdom killed 21 people in the Beni Mellal-Kenifra region, the Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection said on Wednesday.
Individuals suffering from chronic diseases and elderly people constituted the majority of the victims, the same source pointed out in a press release, adding that the significant temperature rise combined with their underlying issues led to their death.
The Moroccan Ministry of Health and Social Protection has swiftly enacted a comprehensive set of measures to combat the health impacts of a severe heatwave gripping Morocco following alerts issued by the National Meteorological Directorate (DGM) indicating soaring temperatures in various regions.
In response to the situation, the ministry has activated round-the-clock shifts at healthcare facilities located in areas experiencing heightened temperatures. This proactive measure includes mobilizing healthcare professionals such as doctors, nurses, and ambulance crews. Essential medicines and medical supplies have been promptly stocked to ensure immediate and effective treatment for those affected.
Citizens are strongly advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, particularly during peak daytime hours from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Key recommendations include staying hydrated by drinking ample water regularly, keeping cool by avoiding outdoor activities during extreme heat periods, and seeking shade or cool environments when possible.
Citizens also urged vigilance towards recognizing symptoms of heat-related illnesses, which may manifest as fever, excessive thirst, muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, and in severe cases, loss of consciousness. Immediate medical attention should be sought if any of these symptoms occur.
