The public prosecutor at the Court of First Instance in Tiznit has ordered the detention of a snack bar owner at the local prison following multiple incidents in June when 38 people suffered food poisoning, well-informed sources said.
The suspect was brought before the prosecutor’s office after an extensive investigation conducted by the judicial police, which included questioning the individual and analyzing microbiological samples taken from the victim’s food.
The snack bar owner, whose trial is set to start on Thursday faces charges of selling food products that do not comply with food safety standards.
In early July, local authorities in Martil, northern Morocco, temporarily closed three fast-food and snack outlets following multiple health violations identified by an inspection committee.
The inspection revealed severe hygiene issues, non-compliance with health and safety regulations, and other violations detailed in a comprehensive report.
During the summer months, the quality of food in tourist destinations often reaches its lowest level due to high temperatures, increasing orders, and insects, among other factors.
