Morocco’s tourism sector is experiencing remarkable growth in the first half of 2024, welcoming an influx of 7.4 million tourists, marking a 14% increase compared to 2023, and a 38% increase compared to 2019, according to Tourism Minister, Fatima Zahra Ammor.
The number of tourists flocking to Morocco has outpaced government predictions. “Our target was a 1 million increase in tourists in 2024. Meanwhile, Morocco welcomed in the first six months over 900,000 additional tourists,” she noted.
Ammor argued that the positive momentum in the sector results from a “clear vision” that is already bearing fruit. “Our country has recorded record achievements in the tourism sector, with 14.5 million tourists visiting our country in 2023, an increase of 34% compared to 2022.”
“The sector generated MAD 105 billion ($10.5 billion) in revenues in 2023, an increase of MAD 27 billion ($2.7 billion) compared to 2019,” she revealed, showcasing the financial impact of the tourism boom.
Under a 2023-2026 roadmap, Morocco aims to position itself as a world-class tourism destination. The strategy is designed to boost the sector’s annual growth rate to 10% and attract 17.5 million tourists by 2026.
“We have focused in our strategy on diversifying the tourism offering across 12 regions. So far, we have signed execution agreements with eight regions,” Ammor explained.
As part of implementing the new roadmap, the tourism ministry is working to support growth in air travel, a crucial component of the tourism infrastructure.
The minister revealed that air travel seats rose by 40% in 2024, compared to a 22% increase in 2023, indicating a robust support system for increased tourist arrivals.
