French police are investigating after a 25-year-old Australian lady said she was raped by five guys in the Pigalle neighborhood in downtown Paris on Saturday, the BBC reported.
No arrests have been made, but prosecutors have stated that investigators are investigating “gang rape,” added the same source.
The incident occurred just days before the beginning of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
According to the French daily Le Parisien, restaurant proprietors phoned for assistance when they spotted the woman’s condition, with her clothing partially removed.
Following the alleged assault, she took refuge in a kebab shop and was treated by firemen before being sent to Bichat Hospital for medical examination.
Paris prosecutor’s office stated that police were examining the claims and that CCTV footage was being reviewed.
“The investigation into the charge of gang rape likely to have been committed on the night of 19 to 20 July has been entrusted to the second judicial police district,” the statement reads.
There is a large police presence on the ground in Paris to ensure the safety of visitors visiting the city during the Olympics, which starts on Friday.
Since last week, officers have been patrolling in large numbers throughout Paris, with armed guards stationed along the Seine river.
Several security zones have also been established across the city, with Paris divided into zones.
Anyone intending to visit particular zones, including the Eiffel Tower, must apply for a special games pass via a police-run portal.
